What you are making
A towerbuster is a portable orgonite muffin: metal-filled catalysed resin with one quartz crystal aimed for compression. If your pour is metal-heavy, bubble-free, and fully cured, it will survive rain, soil, and heat better than a pretty but weak vanity pour.
Why muffin moulds won the culture war
Cup shapes cool evenly, demould quickly, and fit a pocket. Fancy silicon roses look cute online and trap bubbles offline. If this is your first pour, use boring trays until your mix discipline is automatic.
Materials
- Polyester or epoxy resin plus the correct hardener for your brand
- Metal shavings: aluminium, copper, steel, or mixed swarf from a friendly workshop
- One small quartz point per muffin
- Non-stick silicone or metal muffin tray you dedicate to resin
- Disposable gloves, eye protection, and a respirator rated for organic vapour
- Kitchen scale or graduated cups you never use for food again
- Wooden stir sticks and a quiet corner with ventilation
Source metals and resin locally where you can. Quality matters more than brand mystique.
Workspace setup
Work outside or under an extraction fan. Cover the bench with scrap plastic. Preheat metal slightly in cold weather so it does not shock-cure the resin. Keep children and pets away: catalysed resin is not a craft-glitter project.
Measuring and mixing
Weigh resin and hardener exactly as the datasheet demands. Stir slowly for the full pot life time the manufacturer lists, scraping sides and stick. Under-mixing is how you get soft centres.
Packing metal
Fill each cup loosely with metal first, then pour mixed resin through the voids. Tap the tray to help bubbles rise. You want more metal than resin visually, with resin binding everything rather than floating as a thick jelly on top.
Temperature, humidity, and swearing
Hot days shorten pot life; cold days make resin thick and trap voids. If you are sweating into the mix, you are doing it wrong—set up shade. If neighbours complain about smell, you already ignored ventilation guidance.
Crystal placement
Press the quartz in point-down or point-up once the cup is three-quarters full. The resin shrink will squeeze the crystal over hours. Crooked crystals still work aesthetically; Compression alignment is what you optimise for.
Cure and demould
Cover against dust and leave until the piece is rock-hard and cool through the core. Polyester often demoulds in a day; depth and temperature shift that window. If a TB sticks, freeze the tray for ten minutes or flex silicone gently. Never wrestle sharp metal trays without gloves.
Simple field checks
Hold the finished TB in one closed hand and notice weight and temperature equilibrium. Bury one test piece and revisit the site after weather. Compare bird activity, human sleep, and subjective “air pressure” with honest scepticism. One muffin is not a continent-scale experiment.
Batch discipline for activists
If you plan to gift a neighbourhood, number your trays on the pour calendar and photograph stacks before burial. Organisation beats heroic midnight pours that cure unevenly because you rushed the hardener ratio at batch twelve.
Safety recap
Ventilation first. Resin on skin is an irritant; solvents are worse. Cure waste as solid rubbish per local rules, not down the sink. If you are pregnant or chemically sensitive, hand the pour to someone else or skip DIY entirely.

When to throw a batch away
Sticky exotherm, runaway smoke, or wrong hardener ratio? Do not gift failures. Saw bad pieces apart in ventilated space, recycle metal where local rules allow, and landfill the rest responsibly. Cutting corners here poisons trust for everyone.
Photographing your first good pour
Soft natural light shows sparkle patterns better than flash. A clear photo helps future you remember metal density when replication drifts months later.
Teaching neighbours without preaching
Show the muffin, explain materials, mention ventilation you used. Let them touch a cured piece. Fear drops faster than jargon rises.
Defects you can diagnose without mysticism
Sticky spots mean incomplete cure or wrong ratio. Oily bleed means resin–hardener mismatch or contaminated metal. Hollow knock means voids—tap tests never lie. Yellowing tops can be UV or cheap resin; track whether it is cosmetic-only or structural.
Scaling from ten to a hundred pours
Batch your hardener shots with a timer, not with intuition. Label trays by pour time. The twenty-first muffin deserves the same stir diligence as the first; fatigue is how pros quietly ruin weekends.
Tool care
Dispose stir sticks as contaminated waste; do not reuse. Clean spills before they skin. Your future lungs thank present-you for boring discipline.
Community pours
If you host a group, rotate who stirs and enforce respirators even when participants complain about hair. Liability is real; friendships survive rules better than accidents.
When DIY stops making sense
If resin headaches last hours after every session, stop home pouring and buy from a workshop whose ventilation you do not have to maintain. Health beats bragging rights every single time without exception.
Iterate designs slowly
Change one variable per weekend: metal mix, cure temperature, or crystal size—not all three at once. Otherwise you learn nothing except confusion, wasted hardener, and a sour mood that does not impress neighbours.
Storage between pour weekends
Keep resin cans sealed, metals dry, and crystals out of direct sun that can crack thin points. Humidity swings in coastal sheds matter; silica packs cost little compared with ruined batches.
