The Orgonite Community: Where Gifting Came From and What It Is Now
The Orgonite Community and the Gifting Movement What exactly is the orgonite community? If you are new to…

Let us have a look at the man who started it all. Wilhelm Reich did not begin his career as a controversial builder of energetic devices. He was a prominent psychoanalyst, a student of Sigmund Freud, who noticed that emotional repression often showed up as physical tension in the body.
He treated the body as an active field of investigation. His path was a widening circle of ideas, moving from psychology into biology and eventually into atmospheric phenomena.
Reich discovered what he described as a primary creative life energy powering the whole universe. He coined the term orgone energy. It is comparable to the Greek concept of the ether, the Indian Prana or the Chinese Chi.
He observed this energy in living matter and in the atmosphere. Of course, this did not fit neatly into the recognised categories of energy used by orthodox physics. A useful overview of how these ideas developed appears in our account of orgone energy history.
Wilhelm Reich built devices that would function as an accumulator of the ambient orgone energy. Most famously, he built the actual Orgone Accumulator or ORAC.
The accumulator was generally built as a small enclosure, large enough for a person to sit inside. The walls were constructed with alternating layers of organic and metallic materials. The arrangement mattered more than decoration.
Reich proposed that organic materials attract and hold orgone, while metal reflects it. Alternating the materials allowed the enclosure to draw the energy inward and concentrate it. People were instructed to sit inside the box to bathe in this concentrated field.
The physical act was straightforward. The results, of course, were highly debated. Reich collected reports of profound effects from his users, taking the simple enclosure into the territory of biological and energetic research.

historical ORAC from the 1950s
According to Reich, this universal energy exists in two basic states. POR or Positive Orgone eneRgy is the state of free unhindered flux, the life-generating creative state. DOR or Deadly Orgone EneRgy is the state of blockage where this energy is dammed up and cannot flow.
An Orgone Accumulator does exactly what its name suggests. It accumulates whatever is in the surrounding environment.
If you place an ORAC in a healthy, vibrant natural setting, it concentrates POR. But if you place it in a heavily DOR-polluted environment, it concentrates toxic, stagnant DOR. This makes the device unfit for continuous use in our modern world.
The density of modern electromagnetic fields created by communication towers and electronic devices creates a serious DOR problem. We often refer to this dense electromagnetic fog as Electrosmog. In my opinion, sitting in a traditional ORAC in a modern city would simply expose you to a concentrated field of this stagnant energy.
We must keep the vocabulary straight. Reich is credited with discovering orgone, identifying DOR and POR, and inventing the accumulator. But he did not invent orgonite.
Karl Hans Welz invented orgonite in the 1990s. He discovered that a simple matrix of organic resin and metal filings did not just accumulate energy. It actively transformed stagnant DOR into flowing POR.
Later, Don Croft added quartz crystals to this resin and metal mix. This addition amplified the energy and birthed the worldwide gifting movement. We began making simple, functional pieces like the Tower Buster (TB) and the Holy Handgrenade (HHG) to place near sources of Electrosmog.
Many people want a tidy, conventional explanation for how this resin and crystal matrix operates. The piezoelectric effect is real and well documented in engineering, and I sympathise with anyone reaching for it. After all these years I would love a simple mechanical answer too.
But the squeeze a crystal gets while the resin cures is a one-off event. It is finished the moment the resin has set. It cannot be the continuing mechanism.
In my opinion, orgonite works on the etheric level, not through piezoelectricity, scalar waves, or quantum physics.
Similar language does not mean identical construction. Reich’s famous Cloudbuster was a bundle of pipes mounted on a swiveling turret. It was grounded into a flowing water body through one or more thick woven cables.

It was not generating positive orgone. It was accumulating and moving the stagnating DOR in the atmosphere, drawing it down into the water. Operating one required immense caution.

One of Don Croft’s first Cloudbusters / Chembusters
Don Croft’s Chembuster is a completely different device. It uses copper pipes set into a heavy base of orgonite.
Because the orgonite base actively converts DOR to POR, it does not need to be grounded into water. The two devices belong to different eras of research.
People often ask what happens to the radio frequencies when we place a TB near a communication tower. Let us be clear about what happens in the physical environment.
Put an EMF meter next to a mast and then put a piece of orgonite beside it. The meter will beep just as loudly. The radio frequencies are still there.
The physical transmission is unchanged. In our experience, orgonite works on the deadly etheric component — the DOR that those electromagnetic fields generate — and not on the radio waves themselves. We are addressing the energetic environment, not building a physical shield.
As interest in the ORAC grew, accumulators were distributed beyond Orgonon, Reich’s research compound in Rangeley, Maine. This public visibility naturally attracted the attention of the US Food and Drug Administration.
The FDA investigated claims that accumulators were being promoted for medical purposes. Reich’s response was defiant. He believed a court had no jurisdiction over fundamental scientific research, and he refused to participate in the proceedings on their terms.
A federal court issued an injunction restricting the distribution of accumulators and related literature across state lines. Reich simply ignored it.
The legal system focused on his compliance with the order, not on reopening the scientific debate about orgone energy. Contempt of court became the turning point, and Reich was imprisoned in 1957.
Federal authorities destroyed his accumulators and burned his published books and research papers. He died of heart failure in his prison cell at Lewisburg on November 3, 1957. The human cost of the dispute was absolute.
The accumulator survives as an object of historical fascination. Surviving devices, photographs, and archival records allow dedicated experimenters to study how Reich constructed his enclosures.
Reich gave us a vocabulary and a visual model that shaped everything that followed. But the tradition did not stop with him. We had to adapt his principles to survive in an increasingly toxic energetic environment.
At Orgonise Africa, we present functional orgonite as a hands-on tradition. We emphasise practical making, outdoor gifting, and observing the energetic changes in your own environment.
If the history of Wilhelm Reich’s discoveries has made you curious about the later orgonite tradition, you can browse the collection to see how these principles are applied today.
